Sister Club History
The Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) is proud of its long-standing international relationship with Sister Club Kaike Lifesaving Club (LSC), Japan — a friendship founded on mutual respect and shared lifesaving values. This connection began in January 2003 when senior members from Kaike LSC first visited Surfers Paradise SLSC. A year later, the relationship was officially sealed with the signing of a Sister Club Agreement, which marked the start of more than two decades of camaraderie, cultural exchange, and shared lifesaving knowledge.
Kaike LSC is located on Japan's scenic Sea of Japan coastline in the famous hot-spring resort town of Kaike Onsen near Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture. The club started with the idea that athletes who participated in the Kaike Triathlon could give something back to the local community that supports the event. The club's motto, 'For Someone' was born from this idea.
Kaike LSC commenced in January 1999 and joined the International Life Saving Federation member association, the Japan Lifesaving Association, in April 2000. Kaike LSC is comprised of only voluntary members who patrol every day of their summer season in July and August. They often take leave from their professional employment to achieve this.
Our Special Bond
Our friendship has been celebrated through many memorable visits over the years, none more significant than the club's milestone anniversaries. In 2009, a Surfers Paradise delegation of 17 members travelled to Japan to celebrate
Kaike LSC's 10th Anniversary. A decade later, in 2019, nine Surfers Paradise SLSC members and four members from NSW clubs visited Kaike LSC for their 20th Anniversary celebrations, joining more than 200 guests at a gala dinner.
In February 2025, as Surfers Paradise SLSC marked our centenary season, Kaike LSC members made their 12th official visit to Surfers Paradise, helping us commemorate our milestone season.
The Sister Club relationship between Surfers Paradise SLSC and Kaike LSC continues to offer life-changing opportunities for members of both clubs to grow as lifesavers and to experience the cultural richness and hospitality of our Japanese friends.
